Acupuncture for Stopping Smoking

Acupuncture is a treatment which is available to smokers who want to kick the habit. Generally speaking however, the treatment is more effective for those who are genuinely motivated to give up smoking and who are prepared to exercise as much willpower as is within their capabilities.

1. What the Treatment Involves?

After an initial consultation, the patient will be given a treatment involving a combination of acupuncture and ear-acupressure. The whole session lasts approximately half an hour. Whilst the patient relaxes on the couch, the acupuncturist will insert very fine sterile needles into special Chinese acupuncture points on the ears, nose and hands. This process is painless. The needles will stay in place for 20 minutes or so during which time there may be a heaviness of the limbs and a pleasant feeling of relaxation. After about 20 minutes, the needles are withdrawn, and ear- acupressure is applied whereby special tiny herbal seeds are taped onto both ears in certain acupuncture points. The patient is required to press lightly on these seeds, several times a day, which can help to reduce craving, and withdrawal symptoms. The seeds will be taken out and replaced on the second visit.

2.The Aim of the Treatment

Tobacco smokers have higher levels of endorphins than non-smokers

As a result of nicotine stimulation from tobacco smoke. Endorphins are the natural body chemicals that have a calming, relaxing effect. As you stop smoking, therefore, the endorphin levels drop, causing craving and withdrawal symptoms.

Stimulation of the appropiate acupuncture points will cause the release, within the central nervous system, of endorphins until the endorphin levels are balanced. So the result is no craving, no withdrawal symptoms, no side-effects, and no smoking.

3.Cost and Number of Treatments Required

Two sessions are required at the total cost of 90 pounds. Most patients are able to stop smoking after two sessions but some may feel that they require further treatment, in which case, a charge of 40 pounds per session will be made. Under normal circumstances, treatments are given on a weekly basis.

"I am 59 and had smoked 40-60 cigarettes a day for more than 40 years. I had tried to stop smoking using different methods including chewing gums, acupuncture, laser treatment, and hypnotherapy but with no success. Ten weeks ago my friend recommended the Hui Chun Clinic to me. After the first session, I managed to cut down to 2 or 3 cigarettes a day. I was amazed and delighted. A week later, I had another session. Since then I have been a non-smoker. Even now, I still feel calm, and have no craving for cigarettes. I am confident that I'll keep the bad habit away for the rest of my life! "

"Following several attempts to stop smoking, Wei Xiong Chen was recommended to me by a friend who had stopped after treatment from him., I travelled from Hampshire, England to Glasgow some weeks later and was amazed at the success of just two treatments. I have now not had a cigarette for several months. I can recommend the Hui Chun Clinic to anyone.

Mrs J. Lakeland, Fareham, Hampshire.

"I have delayed writing to you as I could not believe that I could stop smoking, even with your help. However, it is now 12 weeks since I had my last cigarette and treatment from you, and I am now quite positive that I will definitely not let the "weed" back into my life.

I was heavily dependent upon nicotine for 45 years and had made many really serious attempts to stop smoking during that time, obviously without success. I suffered such violent and painful withdrawal after even a few days without a cigarette, that my willpower completely collapsed. In fact I had decided that it was impossible for me to stop. Now the impossible has happened - I could not have done this without your acupuncture treatment!

With my sincere thanks - I know for certain that I could not have done this without your help!"

J. Easton, Cumbernauld, Glasgow.
